Good Morning,

New Year's Day single-vehicle motorway collision under investigation 

We’re appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a single-vehicle collision on the southbound A1(M) near Leeming Bar.

It happened at about 7.15am on 1 January 2026, and involved a white Hyundai i20 hatchback.

The vehicle's four occupants were taken to hospital by ambulance for assessment, with one passenger, a woman in her 20s, suffering a serious hand injury. All four are in a stable condition.

Lane one of the motorway was closed to allow safe recovery of the vehicle while emergency services worked at the scene.

We’re appealing for any witnesses to the collision, anyone who may have seen the Hyundai prior to the collision, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage, to contact us.
